The concept of default supply was established by law to temporarily ensure the electricity supply for all customers, even if they have not yet had the opportunity to choose a supplier after moving in or in the event of a new connection. The Luxembourg Institute for Regulation (ILR) has designated Sudstroum S.à.r.L. as the default supplier for the electricity network in the Esch-sur-Alzette area.
For end customers connected to the low-voltage network, the deadline for choosing a new supplier is six (6) months from the first day of the month following the start of the default supply. After this period, the default supply automatically terminates.
For end customers connected to a different voltage level, the deadline for choosing a new supplier is two (2) months from the first day of the month following the start of the default supply. After this period, the default supply automatically terminates.
If you haven’t yet signed a contract with an energy supplier but your home/business is already connected to the grid, you automatically benefit from the default supply.
Please note that this type of supply is time-limited and generally more expensive than a standard contract.
Sudstroum S.à.r.L. has been designated as the default supplier for the electricity network in the territory of Esch/Alzette, for a period of 3 years from 01/06/2026.
The rates charged for a default supply are higher than the rates generally applied under a supply contract. Therefore, Sudstroum advises you to conclude a supply contract as soon as possible with the provider of your choice, who will then take all the necessary steps to supply your point of supply, which will automatically terminate the default supply arrangement.
